The Waterbirth

I spent last night finishing up my painting. I will have to get it professionally shot this week because my scanner isn't picking up the right colors or subtle range of mid-tones. I took this with Ara's SLR instead. Any recommendations on a scanner? I have been using my Epson 1250 for over 5 years and it is just now starting to break down. I'd like to get a larger flatbed this time.

Close-up.

More drawings will come later tonight!

Photo Session

Our dear friends, Jessica Haye & Clark Hsiao of TheCollaborationist.com took some wonderful pictures of us the other day. Here's a few of them from that fateful day...

Waterbirth Process

I've been working on this for a few days and I'm excited to see it almost finished. The background was laid in tonight, and once it dries a bit, I will tighten/soften/blend till finished.

Ara took this picture while I worked.

New Girls

While in Burbank visiting my family, I drew these two. My mom posed for Lina's hair.

Waterbirth

I have to take a short drawing hiatus to work on a new painting for baby tattooville. The ten artists were asked to do a square painting on the theme of "youth is wasted on the young" to be used in a 12-in-1 print. I have been looking forward to painting my Waterbirth sketch so I took this opportunity to work on it.

As simple as this painting is, it has taken me SO long to work on it. Since my deadline is three weeks from now, I can work slow and steady. Unfortunately, this means I can't sleep. I can't put the painting down until it is at a level with which I am content.

I combined Clair and Waterbirth for this sketch.

On a side note, is it difficult to comment on blogger? I had accidentally set it so that only google accounts could comment, but now it is fixed.

Indochine Reproduction on YouTube

I searched my name on youtube so I could watch my AdventureDay videos, and I found this video in the search results!

A time-lapse of a hairy arm reproducing my painting from the Indochine cd cover with colored pencils! Is he wearing a camera around his neck?

One more drawing before I go home.

Sleepless in Southpas

This morning around 11, I came into our studio only to find the love of my life perched like a dead fetal bird on two chairs. The best part about this story is that our apartment is half a block away.

Pia's Pond

These two pieces are going to be in a group show at Angel Art Gallery in Milan in November. I don't see any information on the site yet, and I can't read Italian, but the other artists will be Marcel Dzama, Royal Art Lodge, Kukula, Aya Takano, Murakami, Massimo Caccia, Giuseppe Veneziano, Ronni Cutrone and others. More on that later!

I drew the sketch as one painting, but each will have their own frame and will work separately or together.

Now I can focus on the drawings!

Francie and Brady

Named after The Butcher Boy, one of my favorite movies (and books.)

Francie. She reminds me of my puppy.

Brady. I tried to draw an ugly boy, but I think he's quite attractive.

Girls Girls Girls

I'm on number 11 out of 85 of the Baby Tattooville drawings. Drawing pretty girls is really enjoyable. These are my favorites from the batch.

Cindy

Lulu

Nameless at the moment. Any suggestions?

Some of them are more colorful.

This was Annie's birthday present. She had a ton of huge cupcakes at her birthday bash tonight!

When I was young(er), I would draw boys (mostly) and girls on note cards and give them names and make up stories about them. I find myself doing the same with these drawings.

Good vs Bad

Good things that happened today:

-I finished a painting!
-I cut all the paper I'm going to need for the Baby Tattoo drawings.
-My risotto was on-the-house at Mike and Anne's due to an order mix-up.
-I tested out my new wax seal and its wonderful!

Bad things:
-Woke up at 4pm.
-Major linseed oil spillage on my raw wood desk.
-My printer went kaput! I have to rethink making prints for Baby Tattoo.
-I didn't pick up Sushi from my mom's house and we miss her terribly.
-Its 5:30am and I'm updating my blog because I'm not the least bit tired.

I'm going to tackle some drawings tonight before I go to bed (or get breakfast and pretend I woke up early.)

My stack of sixty-four hand-cut drawing paper.

Initial seal, wax, and melting pot.

A perfect stamp!

Work in progress

I'm working on an illustration for a certain magazine that I cannot reveal until it comes out in December. I can, however, give you a little glimpse of the painting!

I'm calling this painting "Young Boy's Fancy" inspired by all the Twilight Zone episodes I have been watching lately.

Ara is working on a top-secret project for an exhibition in September. He is also working on multiple other projects including storyboards, his website, and portfolio.

A possible encounter for Ara?

Drawings

A quick update of some drawings from this past week. These are not going to be part of the 85 drawings because they're not the right size, but I will update regularly on my progress.

"Nicolette" will be available at Nicole & Suzette's Wedding/Cannibal Flower 8-Year Anniversary show on August 30th.

The following will possibly be future paintings.

Another boy! Maybe...

Baby Tattooville

I'm going to be participating in this year's Baby Tattooville event on October 3rd-5th. It looks like last year's event was successful and everyone had a good time. In fact, they had such a good time, that some of the artists are coming back to hang out with us this year!

Here are some stolen pictures from their press section.

The collaboration piece everyone worked on.

12-in-1 print signing.

The final piece that was made into a giclee print that weekend and given out to everyone!

All the "free" goodies collected throughout the weekend.

I will be contributing a mini-print set and a drawing for the attendees to take home. My goal is to do eighty-five drawings in between the illustration and two commissions I'm working on and forty-seven days to do it. If I squeeze in two drawings a day starting right now, I can make it!
