Esther

I've had Esther's head painted for about week now, but haven't had much time to work on the rest. I didn't have a color scheme in mind for the background but I liked the soft desaturated purples and pinks in her face so I made a big batch of different shades of purples for the foggy sky. They are looking similar to background of my Waterbirth painting. Now that I have to wait for it to dry a bit before I move on to the next step, here are some progress shots.

The first few thick brush strokes for the background.

I got Waterbirth framed with Kate at Random Custom Framing in Highland Park. I love this silver box frame and I found a liner that matched the background purple perfectly. I will turning it in to Billy Shire tomorrow for Baby Tattooville!

Playboy Mansion

Recently, my friend Danielle invited me as her +1 to a pre-party at the Playboy Mansion for the ESPY's. I'm not a big sports fan but who could resist an invitation to Hugh Hefner's house?

The front of the house.

The tennis courts are behind the Greek and I.

The front lawn ornament.

I don't know why he has his star at home.

A pink bunny.

Lots of catered food and drinks, including a sushi bar.

The highlight of the evening was meeting Carlton Banks!

Going Large

I wanted to paint bigger heads without committing to a whole background (just in case I couldn't make it work.) While the flat angle of the top head made me frustrated, it was actually easier than paintings smaller heads. Each head is about 5.5" which is large compared to my regular 2" heads.

So for my next painting, I've drawn out a fairly simple composition using the drawing of Esther on an 30" x 18" panel and will be attempting my first big figure in a long time.

I found this huge bee on my way to the studio today. I saw gold wings glistening in the sun on the concrete sidewalk as I walked. The BODY of the bee is about 1"

Priscilla

I'm saving some of the more detailed drawings for my show at Billy Shire in Spring 2009. I might keep this one too. To make my goal, I have to do extra drawings to make up for the ones I'm keeping. A couple more at my flickr.

Dinner with Sushi

Last night at dinner, Ara said 'wouldn't it be nice if Sushi could eat with us at the table?' so we made it happen! We considered taping a fork to her paw, but that would be silly.

Broken

A couple weeks ago, I dropped my camera while sneaking into a haunted house with Mere. I made the mistake of buying from Circuit City, so now it's going to take weeks before they figure out where I'm supposed to send it to be fixed under the warranty. The first place I sent it to informed me that I sent my camera to the wrong repair shop because I purchased an "extended-warranty, not a warranty-warranty."

In the meantime, painting updates will be via cell phone pictures.

Since I now own a band saw, table saw, and electric sander, I've been playing with cut-outs of my characters. This is the first one.

He looks like an Arthur, maybe?

...And a painting in progress.

This one is driving me crazy.

Sushi wants you to see that she also collects art. Here she is posing in her bedroom next to her favorite pieces. On the left is an old postcard of farm animals getting married that Ara gave her, and the other a little Brooks Salzwedel painting.
