Progress Shots

I haven't done a progress post in a while so I thought I'd share my current painting. This face is life-sized and has take me two days so far to paint. She's part of the sketch I posted recently. The color shifts are due to the different lighting I used at the time the photos were taken. The second to last image was taken under natural light.

Grasshopper

I found this dried up grasshopper in our friend's driveway yesterday. The body is about 2.5 inches!

Alice in Wonderland (Jonathan Miller 1966)

Visually, this is my favorite version of Alice in Wonderland. It was originally a weekly play so there were no masks used to portray the animals. Then it was turned into a film and broadcast on the BBC in 1966.

Work in Progress

I'm overdue for a painting post and although I'm not at that stage where I'm happy with the outcome of the painting, I thought I'd share it anyway. I suppose this can be considered an illustration as its for a specific project (not a show.) It feels strange going back to painting small-scale after doing the large paintings. It made me realize how I was restricting myself all these years on personal work. I like having space to push the paint around, blend it, soften it, smooth it but my tiny brush is leaving strokes that I don't want visible. The heads are only a couple inches wide. It also doesn't help that I've been sick all week!

Most of my paintings go through this stage of uncertainty so I'm not too worried about overcoming it quite yet.

On another note, I'm working on a print giveaway contest for Easter with Juxtapoz.com! It will be a fun, interactive little contest so please check back for details soon.

Magical

This is my favorite picture from our shoot with Bela. I love the glowing daylight in her hair, the pink dress reflecting off her skin, the wispy single strands of hair, and the soft edges. She looks like she could be in the Secret Garden or some other fairy tale. Ara's other pictures are here.

Overdose and Daniel Johnston

Last weekend was the Hi-Fructose group show at Copro Gallery. We were lucky enough to also stumble upon the Rock Paper Scissor show at Robert Berman Gallery featuring work by Ron English, Daniel Johnston, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, among others. Check out the show online here.

Here are some of my favorites of the night:

Chris Berens, close up. So dreamy.

Another Berens.

Kris Kuksi

Brendan Danielsson. Such a good drawing.

Print by Ron English of Daniel Johnston.

Daniel Johnston drawings.

Ron English and Daniel Johnston original.

Ron English inspired by Daniel Johnston. (Can you tell I'm a big fan yet?)

...And here are my Daniel Johnston drawings. I got them when he performed at the Fonda last year and we exchanged art.

Amalie

I wanted to do some of my less time-consuming commissions before I start painting again (which will be today.) I finished this drawing of Amalie last night. I want to keep her ^__^
